The General Zachariah Cantey Deas Apartment A One Bedroom Apartment, located on the first floor of Mansion. General Zachariah Cantey Deas was educated in South Carolina and France, and was one of the most wealthy men of the South in the late 1800’s being born into a powerful cotton empire. He always had a passion for the military and his first military adventure was fighting in the Mexican War. In 1861 he joined the South’s Confederate Army and he armed his regiment with Enfield rifles at a cost of $28,000 in gold and was reimbursed with Confederate bonds. At Shiloh he succeeded to brigade command and was badly wounded himself. He was with Bragg through the Kentucky campaign and was appointed Brigadier General C.S.A. on December 13, 1862. He led his brigade in battle from Chickamauga until the surrender in North Carolina in 1865. After the war, he moved to the North and continued in the cotton trade and owned a seat on the stock exchange in New York City and built his summer cottage “Sea View Villa” on Easton’s Point opposite the extravagant estates that were owned by wealthy tobacco, oil and steel barons that line Cliff Walk. This apartment is easily one of the most lavishly designed residences in all of Rhode Island. Adorned with the original intricately exuberant woodwork, stained glass windows, chandeliers and fireplaces you will step back into time and feel like you too are one of the great business barons of that day and age. The apartment is furnished with the exact antique furniture from 1881 when the house was built for General Deas. This apartment comes with your very own private 1,100 square foot wrap around porch that offers you one of the ultimate oceanfront panoramic views at Sea View Villa of Cliff Walk, Easton’s Beach and a spectacular reef that breaks right off of the estate.
