John Dixon Johnston was the architect of Sea View Villa, which was built in 1881, the first mansion and only mansion built on Easton’s Point facing Cliff Walk. He was a principle associate with famed architect George Champlin Mason Sr. who designed many of the Newport’s most lavish estates during the late 1800’s. Johnston was one of the most prolific of Newport's architects from the 1870s through the 1920s. Starting out as a carpenter, Johnston developed into a builder-architect, a leading businessman and employer, mill owner, civic booster, initiator of Newport's building codes, an inventor and innovator in the construction industry.
